The work of Rollnick and Miller (1995), who describe the different stages of readiness to engage with change, is presented. This change cycle is discussed in relation to the experiences of customers (benefit claimants in this case) as they move through a series of psychological states and change their employment situation from one of economic inactivity to one of gainful and sustainable employment. Within this article the different forms of resistance to change that may be experienced by customers are explored and considered in relation to MI techniques that might be applied by Work Psychologists (WPs). The use of MI is proposed as a technique that would allow Work Psychologists to involve customers in resolving their ambivalence about work and employment opportunities. Such techniques provide Work Psychologists with the tools to strengthen the level of commitment and engagement of previously resistant customers in activities that will help them to make progress towards work. MI comprises several subtle techniques that require careful practice in order to realise the full potential of the approach. Practitioners utilising the techniques would require thorough training, practice and supervision in the techniques to use them skilfully and appropriately within their remit.", pages = "43-52(10)", url = "http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/dwp/joped/2008/00000010/00000001/art00006" }
